NIGERIAN ASSOCIATION OF FRENCH LANGUAGE TEACHERS (NAFT)

French language is the second official language of Nigeria and over the years, many associations have been put in place to promote French language in the country . In this article, we are going to discuss NAFT.

NAFT is an association created to bring Nigerian secondary and primary school French teachers under one umbrella. It is an association with a solid vision which requires participation of French teachers across the country. It is not a new association but many are still yet to recognize its presence.  Therefore, there is a strong need to sensitize french teachers, school owners, french graduates and under graduates to the importance of this association.

We are known for :

-Organizing educational workshops to improve French teaching in the country


-Promoting  French language and culture 



-Encouraging studies and research in various academic fields pertaining to the language. Domains such  as  French literature, linguistics and pedagogy

-We Organize fun and educational trips to French speaking countries.
NAFT encourages production and distribution of teaching support materials such as french educative songs ,nursery rhymes and text books etc . We also encourage use of technology in teaching french. 

Why join NAFT as a French teacher ? 

It is absurd to believe that one is a professional without belonging to a professional body. NAFT provides a platform that allows interchange of ideas. As a group, we identify and solve problems relating to teaching and learning of french in general. We also raise funds to carry out beneficial activities. 

Why are school owners concerned ? 

Today, there are many cases of schools with incompetent french teachers . This is simply because french teachers are being randomly employed. In some cases, schools do not even request for proves such as a teacher's ID or certificates , in a generation where anyone can easily learn via internet or language apps which of course is not enough.

               Teaching french as a foreign language goes beyond one's ability to speak or write in french . Apart from even having a degree in teaching, it is important to work with other french teachers in the state in other to achieve same goals. No wonder we hardly hear of french debates or quiz competitions.

New members are encouraged to make themselves available as their participation during meetings will go a long way in shaping the future of NAFT in general.
